University Laboratory Refurbishment

Garden Street LaboratorySDA were appointed to design the services for the refurbishment of the University of Sheffield property
at 64 Garden Street, (Royal Exchange Building). The project included complete refurbishment of mechanical and electrical services to allow an existing building to be converted from office accommodation to provide engineering laboratories, offices and ancillary spaces for research purposes. The scheme commenced as a generic laboratory facility but developed into very bespoke facilities to meet the specific needs of users.

The areas provided are highly serviced laboratories & workshops located within very limited space. The project required a detailed consultation and briefing process with a number of academic user groups. Careful consideration was necessary to accommodate complex services within an old building and to ensure that external plant did not impact upon the surrounding environment and planningLab2 decisions.  The design was undertaken to allow around 50% of the existing electrical systems from a previous refurbishment of this building to be re-used in line with the University’s Environmental Policy and to assist in keeping the costs within the initial budget estimates
