To maximise returns from low and zero carbon (LZC) technology we must ensure that the technology is correctly selected and sized. Over sizing or incorrect selection often results in systems that fail to meet their targets and objectives.
Identifying load profiles presented by existing buildings, allows us to quickly identify cost effective solutions, thereby optimising performance and maximising benefits. We offer a diagnostic service in which energy loggers, thermal imaging and other recording equipment are applied to the building’s engineering services. This data allows us to monitor and audit the existing energy and water usage and advise on practical improvements which will reduce energy use as well as CO2 emissions.
Our service can also be applied to establish typical load profiles within similar building stock, thereby allowing new incoming service supplies to be sized efficiently. This, in turn, saves infrastructure and utility charges.
Where LZC technology is to be applied to existing buildings there is the opportunity to utilise our building diagnostic service. This monitors and logs the energy use profile of the building, thereby allowing SDA to use software analysis to quickly select renewable and sustainable technology which most suits the energy use profile of the building.
Building Energy Performance – calculating your consumption accurately
As Low Carbon Consultants and energy assessors, we regularly evaluate the thermal performance of proposed buildings at the design and construction stage, for energy performance purposes to meet the requirements of the Building Regulations. (Approved Documents Part L).
These evaluations are undertaken using the latest dynamic simulation modelling tools. This allows complex buildings to be assessed to Level 5. We can also apply Simplified Building Energy Modelling (SBEM – Level 4) to less complex buildings.
To improve the effectiveness of benchmarking, SDA maintain records of a number of past projects, which allows accurate energy consumption data to be introduced into future models and calculations offering a more realistic approach to predicting energy use and potential savings. Our clients are encouraged to allow the gathering of such information to help us and the industry in general, to develop ongoing improvements in the application of LZC technology.

There are a plethora of loans, grants and funding schemes available to the public and private sector. Unfortunately, the rules applicable in these schemes frequently change, making it difficult for those unfamiliar with the process to obtain appropriate funding.

Generate Revenue – it pays to be energy savvy
Savings and revenue offered by high efficiency low and zero carbon technology is not restricted to the simple savings achieved by reducing energy consumption. There are a number of governmental initiatives which are designed to enhance the viability of renewable technology by incentivising their adoption. These include; feed in tariff payments which are applicable to electrical generation equipment such as photovoltaic panels, wind turbines, etc. and the renewable heat incentive tariff, which is payable to renewable/sustainable operators of heat generating plant and equipment.
The rules applicable to these incentives tend to change on a fairly frequent basis and, as with capital funding schemes, we are able to quickly identify which revenue schemes are most beneficial and can advise how your project can take advantage of these incentives to improve the financial viability.
Building Sustainability – using our project environmental assessment service
Clients insist on knowing a designer’s sustainable credentials. Our team includes in-house experienced and dedicated Low Carbon Consultants and specialist engineers using the latest design and measurement technologies to undertake project specific assessments/audits using industry standard environmental and sustainability tools such as BREEAM, LEED, HQE and the Code for Sustainable Homes.
Building Services design is becoming increasingly important in delivering sustainable buildings and we have found that combining our environmental assessment service with a traditional mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) appointment is particularly successful and efficient for our clients, as this allows us to seamlessly incorporate the various sustainability and environmental elements into the MEP design selections.
This valuable service saves time and money during the design stage of projects and allows us to advise on the discharge of planning conditions, early on in the project.
Life Cycle Costings – future proofing as part of the design
Many organisations undertake simple payback as the criteria against which the performance of LZC technology should be judged. However, in many instances this is an overly simplistic approach.
We undertake detailed life cycle costs which take into account more complex issues, such as cost of funding, individual revenue streams, maintenance and replacement costs. Our life cycle costing analysis enables clients to make a more informed assessment of the benefits attributed to sustainable technology.
Wherever practically possible, SDA use actual data gathered from operational systems in order to enhance the evaluation process. Performance information provided by manufacturers is critically scrutinised before data is used in such analyses. We also monitor the performance of existing LZC technology so that empirical data might be utilised, rather than the over optimistic data often provided by manufacturers or suppliers.
Our evaluation service is offered both in conjunction with our MEP design service, or as a separate stand alone appointment, which might be applied to projects designed by others.
